FirstBank Ghana CEO Stresses Integrity and Transparency in Banking at Chartered Institute of Bankers Induction
Accra, Ghana – In a stirring address at the 15th induction ceremony of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana, Victor Yaw Asante, the Managing Director and CEO of FirstBank Ghana, underscored the critical importance of integrity, transparency, and ethical behavior in the banking sector. The event, which took place on Saturday, July 13, 2024, welcomed 237 new inductees into the prestigious ranks of banking professionals.
Mr. Asante, a seasoned banker with a career spanning over two decades, shared insights from his extensive experience, emphasizing that "Ethics is the foundation of our profession. It builds trust and credibility, which are essential for long-term success." His message to the inductees was clear: commit to ethical behavior, sustainability, and professionalism to ensure the banking sector’s resilience and growth.
Reflecting on the challenges that have rocked the banking industry globally and locally, including the recent banking sector clean-up in Ghana, Mr. Asante pointed out that poor regulatory oversight, dishonest accounting, speculative activities, and poor corporate governance were at the heart of these crises. He stressed that these issues underscore the importance of the day’s theme: ethics, sustainability, and professionalism.
Mr. Asante’s own journey in banking began in 1996 and has seen him hold various leadership positions across Africa and the UK, always with a focus on innovation and excellence. His commitment to ethics has been further influenced by his long-standing involvement with Rotary International, where he has served as a Rotary International District Governor for District 9102, Ghana.
Addressing the need for sustainability, Mr. Asante remarked, "Sustainability is not just an option but a necessity." He urged the new inductees to adopt banking practices that positively impact people, the planet, and profit, thereby contributing to the economy’s overall health.
On professionalism, Mr. Asante encouraged the inductees to maintain high standards of competence and conduct, emphasizing continuous learning and staying abreast of industry trends. He also highlighted the importance of community involvement, sharing how his engagement with Rotary International has enriched his life and strengthened communities.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Asante welcomed the new members to the noble profession of banking, urging them to uphold the highest standards of ethics, strive for sustainability, and maintain professionalism in their work. He expressed confidence in their potential to contribute significantly to a trusted, resilient, and socially dedicated banking sector.
The induction ceremony marks a significant milestone for the 237 aspiring and practicing bankers, setting them on a path to excellence and ethical practice in their professional journeys.
