Verifying Your Income Tax Return Online: A Step-by-Step Guide

Posted on June 28, 2025

Ensuring Timely Verification of Your Income Tax Return (ITR)

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has recently made changes to the Income Tax Return (ITR) verification process, making it mandatory to verify your ITR within 30 days from the date of submission. Failure to do so will render your return invalid, as if you never filed it in the first place.

E-verification is the most convenient and instant method for verifying your ITR, with various options available such as generating an Aadhaar OTP, using an existing EVC, or utilizing a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). However, if you prefer not to e-verify, you can still verify your ITR by sending a physical copy of the ITR-V.

To e-verify your tax return, you can follow several methods, including e-verification through Cleartax, generating an Aadhaar OTP, using an existing EVC, or utilizing a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). Each method has its own set of steps to follow, ensuring a smooth verification process.

It is important to note that the new rule of verifying your ITR within 30 days applies to returns filed online on or after 1st August 2022. Therefore, taxpayers are advised to verify their ITR promptly to avoid any issues with their tax filing.
