UMO Student Takes on Role as USGA Intern

Posted on June 1, 2025

“UMO Senior Accounting Major Kate Carter Excels in USGA Internship”

University of Mount Olive Star Shines Bright in USGA Internship

MOUNT OLIVE — At the tender age of 19, Kate Carter, a senior accounting major at the University of Mount Olive (UMO), is already making waves in the professional world with her summer internship at the United States Golf Association (USGA). With a background that marries academic brilliance, athletic talent, and burgeoning professional experience, Carter’s story is one of ambition, dedication, and inspiration.

Born and raised in Laurinburg, Carter’s journey is deeply rooted in the values of family and faith. Supported by her parents, William and Leigh Carter, and her sisters, Claire and Carleigh, she has excelled in a variety of sports including golf, tennis, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. It was her passion for volleyball that led her to UMO in the fall of 2022, where she has found a harmonious balance between her studies and athletics.

Carter’s academic achievements are as impressive as her athletic ones. Boasting a 3.921 GPA, she is on a clear path to graduate in the spring of 2025. Her choice of accounting as a major stems from a love for numbers and problem-solving, a skill set she has honed both in the classroom and on the field as a member of the Trojan women’s volleyball team and the Accounting Society.

Her professional journey took a significant leap forward this past spring with an internship at Markham, Mitchel, and Stroud, where she gained invaluable experience during the tax season. This summer, Carter has taken her talents to the USGA, working with the merchandising team during the Women’s US Open and the Senior Men’s US Open. Her role involves a mix of visual merchandising, inventory management, and customer service, offering her a unique insight into the operations of major golf tournaments.

Carter’s success is not just a testament to her hard work but also to her character. Described by those close to her as hardworking, happy, bubbly, motivated, loving, and kind, she draws inspiration from her family and faith. "My family and God inspire me to be who I am," Carter shares. "I have a very loving supportive family that inspires me to grow and be the best I can be. And by being a follower of Christ, I am inspired to love and treat everyone with kindness."

UMO has played a pivotal role in Carter’s growth, providing her with opportunities to excel both academically and personally. "UMO has helped me grow as both a student and a person and is preparing me for my future in many ways," she says, expressing gratitude for the support from professors, coaches, and the UMO community.

As Carter continues her summer internship with the USGA, her eyes are set on the future with optimism and excitement. "This internship has really opened up new ideas, and I am excited to see what the future holds. I would love to intern with the USGA again next summer and explore more opportunities in this field," she says, looking forward to what promises to be a bright and promising career.

Kate Carter’s story is a shining example of how dedication, support, and hard work can pave the way for remarkable achievements. As she progresses through her internship and beyond, there’s no doubt that this UMO star will continue to shine brightly, both on and off the field.
