ICAN Sokoto District Society Embarks on Construction of Modern Secretariats to Boost Accountancy in Nigeria
Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria – In a significant move to enhance the resources available to aspiring accountants in Nigeria, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Sokoto District Society, has announced its plans to construct modern secretariats in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states. The announcement was made by Alhaji Ismaeel Oluwaseun Suleiman, the newly inaugurated 5th Chairman of the Sokoto District, during a ceremony held in Birnin Kebbi over the weekend.
Under the leadership of Suleiman, the district has successfully acquired prime land in both Birnin Kebbi and Sokoto states, with the strategic locations chosen for the construction of the secretariat and study centre. This initiative is set to be a collaborative effort with the ICAN national body and State Governments, ensuring the facilities meet the highest standards of excellence.
Suleiman expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "This initiative will offer easy access to information and resources for aspiring accountants, fostering their growth and development." He also highlighted the successful registration of the District’s Study Centre name, a crucial step towards commencing lectures and ultimately increasing the number of Chartered Accountants in the region.
The new chairman has pledged to focus on several key areas including community relations, the publication of a district newsletter, welfare packages, the development of the district’s website, member training, conference participation, and a youth engagement program. Suleiman emphasized the importance of unity among members to achieve these ambitious goals.
“Our goal is to create an inclusive and welcoming society where every member feels valued, engaged, and empowered to contribute," Suleiman remarked, urging members to share their ideas for collective progress.
The ceremony also featured a valedictory speech by the immediate past Chairman, Alhaji Sanni Yusuf Olatunji, who praised the procurement of land in Sokoto and Kebbi States as a significant achievement despite financial challenges. The Special Guest of the occasion, Chief of Staff to the Kebbi State Governor, Barrister Attairu Maccido, lauded ICAN for its ethics, professionalism, and contributions to Nigeria’s economic development. Maccido also encouraged the association to conduct professional examinations for accounting students in Kebbi State to foster early engagement and assured the state government’s support in enrolling students for their professional examinations.
This initiative by the ICAN Sokoto District Society marks a pivotal step towards enhancing the accounting profession in Nigeria, promising a brighter future for young accountants in the region.
