From Online Student to Influential Educator: The Journey of Suzette Pounds in Accounting Education

From Online Student to Esteemed Online Educator: The Inspiring Journey of Suzette Pounds

In the evolving landscape of education, where digital platforms have become increasingly prominent, the story of Suzette Pounds, CPA, MACC, stands out as a beacon of inspiration and dedication. Pounds, who has been an adjunct accounting instructor at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) for over nine years, brings a unique perspective to her role, having navigated the challenges and triumphs of online education firsthand as a student.

Pounds embarked on her professional journey with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Georgia, followed by a successful career in public accounting. Her passion for taxation led her to significant roles in the industry, including a stint as a controller for a large credit union. However, it was in 1994, with the desire for flexibility to raise her children, that Pounds made a pivotal decision to start her own tax and accounting practice from her home—a venture that is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

The quest for further education led Pounds back to the academic world in 2010, this time as an online student at Gardner-Webb University, where she pursued her master’s in accountancy–taxation. Balancing her business, her responsibilities as a single mother, and her studies, Pounds completed her degree in less than two years, a testament to her determination and time management skills.

Reflecting on her educational journey, Pounds said, "I believe that my experience of having earned my undergraduate degree in a traditional in-person college environment, and then going back to school to earn my graduate degree in a fully online educational experience all while balancing work and children as a single mom has helped me to be a better online teacher and mentor for my students."

After earning her master’s, Pounds transitioned into teaching and developing courses in an online environment at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she quickly ascended to the role of accounting program chairwoman. Under her leadership, the department expanded its online offerings and introduced two certificates to help students meet the requirements for the Certified Public Accountant examination.

Pounds’ commitment to her students and her belief in the power of online education are evident in her praise for SNHU. "SNHU hires instructors who have real-life professional experience which adds to classroom discussion," she noted. "The instructors and administration truly care about our students and want them to excel and support them on their journey to reach for the careers they desire."

As online education continues to grow, Suzette Pounds’ story serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for personal and professional growth that it offers. Her journey from an online student to a respected online educator exemplifies the impact of dedication, resilience, and the transformative power of education. Pounds’ experience not only enriches her teaching but also makes her a relatable and inspiring figure for students navigating their own paths in the digital learning environment.
